By now, you’ve likely heard more than your fair share about AI. As designstripe's Growth Marketing Lead, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of this technology, which I recently wrote about. By understanding the landscape and learning how to leverage these tools effectively, I've discovered that AI can make me significantly better at my job.
I consider myself lucky – at designstripe, we've wholeheartedly embraced the AI revolution. AI has become an integral part of our culture and workflows, driving efficiencies and enhancing all parts of our business. In fact, we’ve even integrated the use of AI as one of our evaluation metrics.
But this journey with AI isn't exclusive to designstripe. It's a path that's open to all growth marketers, regardless of their company's size or industry. That's why I've put pen to paper (or, more accurately, fingers to keyboard) to write this article. Through these words, I aim to pull back the curtain on how AI has revolutionized my work at designstripe and share practical insights and tips that you can apply in your own growth marketing efforts. If I can help even one fellow marketer navigate the AI landscape more confidently, I'll consider this a success. So, without further adieu, here are the main ways in which I use AI in my day-to-day as designstripe’s Growth Marketing Lead.
1. Creating Ad Copy and Visuals in a Snap
As designstripe's growth marketing lead, one of my core responsibilities is acquiring new users, and creating ads that convert plays a crucial role in fulfilling that objective. I've found that AI tools have become indispensable allies in this endeavor. Chat-based tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Jasper, and Copy.ai have transformed the way I craft compelling headlines. One of the tricks I found that has helped me get really good results, really quickly, is to feed these tools successful ad creatives from other brands, and request taglines for my ads in a similar style and tone of voice. It's like having a team of seasoned copywriters at my fingertips, ready to generate the perfect line.
But it doesn't stop at the headlines. When it comes to the visual elements of the ads, my team and I are also leveraging AI. We use Midjourney and our soon-to-be-released AI social media designer to create stunning ad creatives from just a few prompts. These AI-powered tools have revolutionized our creative process, enabling us to produce high-quality, eye-catching visuals in a fraction of the time it used to take.
2. Reporting on the Metrics that Matter
In the fast-paced world of growth marketing, timely and accurate reporting is crucial to decision-making. I've found that AI tools have been a game-changer in this respect. I use ChatGPT's Code Interpreter to analyze anonymized reports – these can be CSV files of a specific subset of users, paid ad reports, product usage data, or other relevant documents. It’s as simple as toggling on Code Interpreter from the plugins section on ChatGPT (only available to paid users), uploading a document, and asking questions.
With just a few simple queries, I’m able to quickly gain insights on precisely the kind of information I want. This can be, for example: where are most of our users coming from in the last two weeks?; what has my growth rate been over the last month?; which ads are performing the best?; which country has the lowest CPM?; and so on. Not only is the AI able to give me written answers, but it can also produce charts to help me visualize the data. This rapid access to insights allows me to make more informed decisions in a flash, giving me a competitive edge.
3. Developing a Well-Informed Marketing Strategy
Strategy is the backbone of growth marketing, and it's an area where I've found AI to be an invaluable ally. From suggesting new features to making pricing decisions and identifying trends for user acquisition, AI has revolutionized how I approach these tasks.
One concrete example is my use of LennyBot to analyze the top referral marketing programs of other successful B2B companies. Rather than spending countless hours researching and compiling data, I was able to obtain this vital information rapidly through AI. This knowledge has not only informed my understanding of the market but will also play a key role in shaping our future product decisions.
Similarly, when it came to comparing the pricing of tools similar to ours, AI enabled me to get a good sense of the market benchmark quickly. By analyzing the pricing strategies of competitors, I’ll be able to help craft a pricing model that's competitive yet aligned with our value proposition.
These experiences with AI tools like LennyBot have transformed my strategic planning process. They allow me to stay ahead of the curve, make more informed decisions, and navigate the ever-changing reality of growth marketing with confidence and agility.
4. Cratfing, Iterating and Refining Blog Articles
Blog writing is another key aspect of my role and one that I’m often called on to help out with – and AI has been a game-changer in this area too. I’ve always considered myself a good writer, but not a relatively fast one – a blog article would take me, on average, around 2-3 days to complete in the past. Now, with the AI tools at my disposal, this process is 75%-90% faster. Here’s a quick overview of how I write blogs now, with the help of AI.
I typically start by using an app called SuperWhisper, an incredibly fast and accurate AI speech-to-text tool, to transcribe my spoken thoughts into a written brief. Once I have my brief, I feed it into ChatGPT and request a first draft. Once I have that, I paste it in Google Docs and go through it paragraph by paragraph, refining the text to produce a polished blog post. This process is a combination of me re-writing parts of the text by hand, and having a conversation with the AI to adjust the sections I don’t feel work well. I’ll ask it anything from “give this a more casual tone of voice” to “add the following example to give the paragraph some more context” to “make this section longer, and include a few sentences about topic X”. Once I’m happy with the text, I’ll paste it into Grammarly to make the final edits and tweaks.
This streamlined process has transformed my writing workflow, enabling me to produce high-quality content more quickly and easily than ever before.
5. Writing Code As a (Mainly) Non-Tech
Being a growth marketer means wearing many hats, and contributing to the development side of our business is an increasingly essential part of my role. In the past, I've been wary of labeling myself as "technical," but the advent of AI tools has changed the game entirely. AI has been a tremendous help, enabling me to dive into areas that once felt out of reach.
With AI, the line between technical and non-technical is getting blurrier by the day. Tools that once required extensive coding knowledge are now accessible to a broader audience, empowering us to perform tasks that seemed reserved for the tech-savvy just a few months ago. This democratization of technology is exciting, and it's allowed me to contribute in new ways.
In my journey, for example, I've written scripts using the Stripe API to create hundreds of coupons for an AppSumo campaign, written javascript functions to enhance our Webflow lead forms, and even made code-based UX improvements on our website. All of this has been possible because of AI, and it's a testament to how these tools can make anyone, to a certain degree, technical – and can give growth marketers new superpowers.
AI has Become an Indispensable Ally in My Role
AI is now part and parcel of my role as designstripe's Growth Marketing Lead. It has enabled me to create better ads, streamline reporting, develop better and more well-rounded strategies, transform my blog writing process, and even contribute to the development side of our business. The benefits of AI are real and significant, and in today's fast-paced world, growth marketers need to embrace these tools to stay at the top of their game.
The potential of AI is immense, and while it can't solve all the challenges of growth marketing, it can certainly make the journey smoother. In a world where the pace of change is relentless, AI offers a way for growth marketers to stay agile, efficient, and competitive.
